HERE WE ARE: Notes for Living On Planet Earth.

I joined the team at Studio AKA to work on this film based on the No. 1 New York Times Bestseller and 2017's No. 1 TIME Best Book of the Year by Oliver Jeffers and follows Finn; a precocious child who, on Earth Day, learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents — and a mysterious exhibit at the aptly titled Museum of Everything.

TO KEEP THE Captivating storytelling OF THE ORIGINAL.

Under the direction of Philip Hunt and working alongside the most talented team of artists at studio AKA, I worked on the textures and look development of many assets of the film (including most buildings in the final scene in New York City) and then went on lighting some shots for the show.

The challenge was to integrate Oliver’s illustration style's key elements but find a way to translate it into a 3D. There was a balance to be found between Physically based rendering and stylized “flat” renders. I created a set of textures and brushes for Substance Painter, trying to emulate as close as possible the type of strokes Oliver uses in his artwork and the type of pattern/textures. The film has some 2D sequences and elements and the idea was to have 2D & 3D living in the same space as harmoniously as possible.

This visual look alongside Phillip’s new take on the story took the book into a new realm.
